Alexey Markin M.A. studied art at the Stroganov University in Moscow and History of Art and Political Science at the University of Hamburg. In 2018, as a member of the artists‘ group “Krasnaya Shpana” he presented the research and performance project “Who owns the avant-garde? The Malevich Project” at the Kampnagel Theatre in Hamburg , a project that examined the controversy surrounding the cultural heritage of the historical avant-garde between Russia and Ukraine. Alexey Markin has been co-organizer of the seminar series “Decolonizing Eastern Europe” since 2020. He is currently working on a dissertation in which he will analyze how black artists were portrayed by themselves and by others during the Cold War.
