Dariusz Gierczak studied geography and Slavic studies (Russian/Czech) at the Philipps University of Marburg and has held various positions at the Herder Institute for Research on East Central Europe since 2008, with interruptions. Among other things, he was a staff member in the project "Topography of the Shoa in Breslau 1933-1949" at the TU Dresden in 2018/2019. Since 2019, the coordinator of the "Project Challenges of Geodata-based Research on Place Names (Gazetteers)". His main research interests include population geography and migration in East Central Europe, urban development and neighborhood research as well as urban research Silesia in particular. He is the author of numerous publications in German, English and Polish. Most recently, his essay "Former border railway stations in Central and Eastern Europe: revitalization of a problematic cultural heritage in Poland" was published in 2020 (together with Weronika Dragan).
