David Feest is a research associate at the Nordost-Institut (IKGN e.V.) in Lüneburg, affiliated with the University of Hamburg. His research focuses on the history of Estonia, the Baltic republics, the Soviet Union, and Russia. He earned his PhD in East European History at the University of Göttingen with a dissertation on Die Sowjetisierung des Estnischen Dorfes 1944–1953 (“The Sovietisation of the Estonian Village, 1944–1953”). In 2015, he completed his habilitation in modern history at Humboldt University in Berlin with a thesis entitled Ordnung schaffen. Bäuerliche Selbstverwaltungen und Obrigkeit im ausgehenden Zarenreich (1834–1889) (“Creating Order: Peasant Self-Government and Authority in the Late Russian Empire (1834–1889)”).
