Since 2012, Martin Kohlrausch has been Professor of European History at KU Leuven. Prior to this, he held academic positions at the Technical University of Berlin, the German Historical Institute in Warsaw, and the University of Bochum. He has also been a fellow at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study, the Luxembourg Centre for Contemporary and Digital History, and the Leibniz Institute of European History in Mainz. Kohlrausch’s academic journey began with a doctoral dissertation on monarchy and mass media, which laid the foundation for numerous publications exploring the transformation of monarchy and the mediatization of politics. Beyond this, his research has focused on the role of experts in European history since the 19th century—a theme he explored in a number of works, including “Building Europe on Expertise” (London, 2014), which he co-authored with Helmuth Trischler. An area of particular interest is architects and urban planners in East Central Europe, as reflected in several of his publications on architectural and urban history, most notably “Brokers of Modernity” (Leuven, 2019).
