The special library of the BKGE, which is open to the public, currently contains about 62,000 books and 990 periodicals (including about 100 current periodicals and 180 in Eastern European languages).
Text
The collection areas cover the entire area of East Central, Northeastern, Eastern and Southeastern Europe. The focus of the collection corresponds to the disciplines of history, literature and linguistics, art history and folklore/European ethnology represented at the BKGE.

The entire collection can be searched on the Internet, both via the catalog of the Oldenburg Library Network (ORBIS) and via the Common Library Network (GBV) and the Karlsruhe Virtual Catalog (KVK).

The libraries of the BKGE and the Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg cooperate closely, among other things in the area of new acquisitions, additions to the holdings and Internet presentation (online cataloging). The library of the BKGE is a member of the Arbeitsgemeinschaft der Bibliotheken und Dokumentationsstellen der Ost-, Ostmittel- und Südosteuropaforschung (ABDOS).
Inventory history
The core of the collection goes back to the book collection of the Eastern European historian Herbert Ludat (1910-1993). In 2006, the library of the folklorist and settlement historian Walter Kuhn (1903-1983) was integrated.
