The question of how to deal with strangers and the foreign, but also with one's own sense of being alien, is at the center of many public discussions. Also for young people, the issue of how these matters are handled in their immediate, everyday environment is by no means an insignificant one. What do parents or grandparents say when they hear about the arrival of a new classmate? HEIMATFREMDE is offered by the Cultural Office for Transylvania.

This was the starting point for the stage play HEIMATFREMDE, which is about 19 minutes long and was developed and produced by two 12th grade students. Having interviewed a number of adults about their childhood and adolescent memories and backed up what they heard with research, the writer-performers retell these stories using their own words and creative means. HEIMATFREMDE brings to life the story of a group of people who decided to flee from Ceausescu's regime in

Romania is a country in southeastern Europe with a population of almost 20 million people. The capital of the country is Bucharest. The state is situated directly on the Black Sea, the Carpathian Mountains and borders Bulgaria, Serbia, Hungary, Ukraine and Moldova. Romania was established in 1859 from the merger of Moldova and Wallachia. Romania is home to Transylvania, the central region for the German minority there.

 in the 1970s. The play deals with life in Romania before their departure, but also with their difficult arrival in the Federal Republic of Germany. These stories form part of a little-known chapter of Cold War history and open our eyes to deep-seated experiences of oppression, expulsion and escape that are anchored in the biographies of a great many people.
The workshop can be booked as a half or full day event; the activities can function as an impulse or kick-off event in the context of school project weeks (relevant classes: German, history, drama) or as part of the holiday activities run by various educational institutions.
