Structure and architecture. The post-industrial heritage of Upper Silesia

Photographs by Thomas Voßbeck
The aesthetics of the industrial facilities of Upper Silesia presented in this exhibition are artistically showcased for the first time in the photographs of Berlin-based photographer Thomas Voßbeck. He impressively highlights the imposing halls and machines through his composition and use of light.
Since the end of the 1980s, the Polish mining region of Upper Silesia has undergone profound changes. The industrial architecture, most of which dates back to before World War II, is gradually disappearing or being repurposed. Many plants have already been shut down or demolished, while others from the early days of industrialization are still in operation today.
Thomas Voßbeck's photographs were taken between 2009 and 2010 and show industrial facilities built before 1945 that have been preserved in various forms to this day. His photographs reflect the cultural heritage of this European region.
The exhibition and book project “Structure and Architecture: The Post-Industrial Heritage of Upper Silesia” was realized by Europareportage in cooperation with the German Cultural Forum for Eastern Europe and the Silesian Museum in Katowice. A German-Polish companion volume is available for the exhibition: 200 pages, 116 color illustrations, ISBN 978-3-936168-57-0
