The Copernican network

Spätestens seit den 1970er Jahren ist bekannt, dass Kopernikus kein „einsamer Gelehrter“ war. Als Kanoniker übernahm er für das Domkapitel in Frauenburg vielfältige Verwaltungsaufgaben und verfügte dadurch über viele Kontakte. Enge, freundschaftliche Beziehungen sind nur wenige bekannt, wie etwa jene zu dem Theologen Tiedemann Giese. Unklar ist auch, wem Kopernikus das Manuskript des Commentariolus, seine erste Beschreibung des heliozentrischen Modells, zukommen ließ.

Anders als zeitweilig angenommen, fand Kopernikus’ Schrift De Revolutionibus schon in der ersten Auflage eine gewisse Verbreitung unter europäischen Astronomen. Wie der amerikanische Copernicus-Experte Owen Gingerich nachweisen konnte, handelte es sich keineswegs um ein Buch, das keine Beachtung fand. Dennoch blieb in den Jahrzehnten nach dem Tod von Kopernikus die Zahl der Anhänger seiner Lehre zunächst überschaubar.

The fact that Copernicus was not a “lonely scholar” has been known since at least the 1970s. As a church canon, he was responsible for completing a wide range of administrative tasks for the cathedral chapter in Frauenburg (Frombork) and, as a result, had a wide network of contacts. We only know of a few close friendships of his, however, including his friendship with the theologian Tiedemann Giese. It is also unclear to whom Copernicus gave the manuscript for Commentariolus, his first description of the heliocentric model.

Contrary to what was previously thought, the first edition of Copernicus’ De Revolutionibus was reasonably well known among European astronomers. American Copernicus expert Prof. Owen Gingerich has proven that this certainly wasn’t a book that was overlooked. Despite this, the number of followers of Copernicus’ teachings initially remained small in the decades after his death.
