Are you looking for a place in East Central Europe? The web application gazetteers.net allows you to search several digital gazetteers for place names at the same time. In addition, information from different databases can be compared in the application.
Beside global databases, there are several available that focus specifically to Poland. Besides their geographical range, the databases differ in terms of data scope and the type of information they contain; for example, in addition to major gazetteers, some containing historical information are also integrated into the application.
In order to easily merge related information, the application supports the identification of items in different databases which refer to the same geographical entity. By linking corresponding items across gazetteers it facilitates data aggregation and comparison.
The web application was developed as part of the Gazetteer research project by the Herder Institute for Historical Research on East Central Europe in Marburg, the Leibniz Institute for Regional Geography in Leipzig and the Justus Liebig University Giessen.
