The photograph shows the barracks of the Sikh Riflemen in Kyiv in April 1918. These units of the Ukrainian People's Republic should not be confused with the Ukrainian Sikh Riflemen from Galicia, but were the first independent Ukrainian army of the young central Ukrainian state.
