Mitropa – The GWZO’s Journal – is aimed at a broad, interested readership. As the annual magazine of the Leibniz Institute for the History and Culture of Eastern Europe (GWZO), it offers insights into the institute’s ongoing research. We’ve named our annual magazine Mitropa: the acronym for the Mitteleuropäischen Schlaf- und Speisewagen Aktiengesellschaft (Central European Sleep and Dining Car Joint Stock Company) signals movement and interconnection; it stands for historical change and continuity. The name testifies to the dynamism of the purpose to which the GWZO has dedicated itself since 1996: to continually explore anew the history and culture of the regions between the Baltic Sea, Black Sea and Adriatic from Late Antiquity to the present and thereby contribute substantiated insights to our imaginings of Europe. The Mitropa Annual is published in print and also in open access for online reading and downloading under the CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 licence.
