Bukovina is a historical landscape in modern Romania and Ukraine. The northern part is situated in the Ukrainian Chernivtsi Oblast, while the southern part is part of the Romanian Suceava County. The region once formed a part of the Principality of Moldavia and the Habsburg Monarchy.

, which is remembered today as a multi-ethnic area par excellence, has been the subject of diverse research. Much less attention has been paid to its musical diversity, although the region produced excellent musicians who were often in close exchange with musical centers such as Vienna or Bucharest. The project "(Nach)Klänge der Bukowina: Musikkulturen einer multiethnischen Region" "Sounds of Bukovina: Musical Cultures of a Multiethnic Region" therefore focuses on a hitherto little explored perspective of European cultural history. The aim is to provide a glimpse into the musical life of Bukovina.
