A Doctor and his Military Case
In March 2015, a military case from the First World War was donated to the Transylvanian Museum. It accompanied Dr. Wilhelm Hager during World War I to the southern front – to Bosnia and the Isonzo, and then to the eastern front, to Galicia, Bukovina, Bessarabia and, finally, in 1918 to South Tyrol. Also as a Romanian citizen after 1918, Dr. Hager once again had to fight, this time on the side of the Romanian army. In 1919-1920 he took part in the campaign on the Tisza River as a medical officer of the reserve (medic cǎpitan).

A Steinway for Eugen d'Albert?
In the “Eichendorff Hall” of Haus Schlesien in Königswinter there is a Steinway grand piano made of lemon wood. It is a noteworthy museum object not only because the famous Steinway & Sons lettering is emblazoned on it, but also, and above all, because it was owned by Gerhart Hauptmann, the 1912 Nobel Prize winner for literature.

Barabashovo Market
The Barabashovo Market is located in the Saltivka district, the part of the city that has been most devastated by the war. This vast retail complex is considered the largest industrial and household goods market in Ukraine and, with an area of over 75 hectares, is the largest in Eastern Europe and one of the largest markets in the world.
On March 17, 2022, during the fighting for Kharkiv, Russian troops shelled Barabashovo with Grad multiple rocket launchers, which sparked numerous fires throughout the market. Within a very short time, an inferno had engulfed almost the entire retail area and spread to nearby private residences. The burning market was shelled a second time, killing one firefighter, and on March 25, it was shelled again. The numerous attacks destroyed a large part of the market, while the fumes produced by burning materials, especially plastic, caused massive environmental damage, estimated by the State Environmental Inspectorate of Ukraine at a cost of almost 2 billion UAH.

Down the Danube in the Ulm Box
A flat-bottomed wooden boat with a hut on top, sides painted in black and white stripes, and two very long oars at the front and back – that's an "Ulmer Schachtel" (Ulm box). This vessel, which seems curious today, was once an important means of transport on the Danube.

From Sample Case to Museum Piece
Over 100 years, and it's still on the move – despite its rather plain appearance, this old brown case has had a rather impressive "career". It was once a sample case for woolen fabrics, a trusted companion on vacation trips, a means of transportion on the run and a piece of furniture in the bare dreariness of a home for refugees. Today, on loan from HAUS SCHLESIEN, it is an exhibit in the Museum of the Lubuskie Region in Grünberg (Muzeum Ziemi Lubuskiej w Zielonej Górze), and a silent witness to a hundred years of history.

Hungarian – Communist – Jew?
This article sheds light on some facets of the life of the philosopher Ernő Gáll, who as a Jew, a communist, and a Hungarian was both politically persecuted and a perpetrator. A committed intellectual, he acted as a mediator between different political factions and hostile ethnic groups throughout his life. In doing so, he developed an ethic of dignity and responsibility and coined the phrase "the dignity of individual character," which also has relevance for today's debates around the issue of identity.

Pickling and preserving in Bulgarian food culture
Producing food at home, preserving and pickling it in jars, played important and diverse roles in Southeastern Europe and Bulgaria in the 20th century. Since the 1990s, this practice has undergone a number of changes and now fulfils a variety of functions – from everyday food security and small gifts for friends or family to a key role in the church year, feast days, and the Bulgarian culinary culture. Sometimes home preserving simply expresses the desire for continuity of flavours.

With Grandma's Laundry Basket, Running for our Lives
A nondescript woven wicker basket stands in the storeroom of the Martin Opitz Library in Herne. The handles on either side indicate that it might once have served as a laundry basket. With its four rather makeshift wheels, however, the basket tells more than just a family story; it also tells of local history and a story of escape.
